Dry

Eyes are pretty dried out. I felt the need to blog to get things off my chest (read: rant). I feel extremely lost over issues and feel guilty about it in a kind of cringey white guilt way. I think I have to, in an even more cringey way, resort to stepping away from whatsapp and the like. I'm very tired and just want to be with Christelle. I want my visa issues to be resolved, I want to make sure my apartment is OK, I want to get back to being motivated about learning and my job. I want my family to be happy and my younger brother to trust his instincts and learn to try and fail or disappoint and be his own success. I want people whom I've wronged to know I sincerely tried but apologize nonetheless. I'm not sure what spaces I can be my authentic self except here, sort of.

Here are some 'cultural issues' as Carlin might have put it:
-Our parents are proud their kids go to Harvard, OxBridge etc but then when they come back slightly ostracized because of an accent that for most people they probably have little control over, any ideas they might have are dismissed as Western liberal nonsense, unless of course it follows the dominant discourse that touts pragmatism and free markets
-We are scared of 'AOC-type politics' and warn of the dangers of liberal extremism, marxism, etc; again we call these 'sjw politics', or Westernized thinking, out of touch etc, but then we inherit colonial practices and ideas, neo-liberal economics, all products of the 'West' and are surprised if it brings along any of the consequences and fair criticisms of those ideas that also originate in the West
-We idolize and re-post LKY giving fiery speeches in cheem or poetic, usually Oxbridge British English 'this is not a game of cards!
-We are fine with comparing down 'at least we are not the US', but 'we are in a different situation' when trying to compare up ('scandinavian standard of living')
-We keep saying 'Singapore is small, we must be open to survive', but pick and choose what we are open to - rich tax avoiding foreigners and migrant workers that have low socio-economic and political power, but no 'Western ideas', sjw language, no refugees
-Singapore is actually beholden to shareholders - there are real threats that voting away from the centre-right PAP will cause investor confidence to fall, it's a reality that we seem powerless to or too cowardly to try and confront and change

I have more perhaps, but I've also calmed down for the most part... we just need to talk more.

Bus Drivers

I am glad that there are several opinion pieces in the Straits Times about how we need to do 'soul-searching' over the recent SMRT strikes. But I cannot empathize. With the journalist I mean. Call me pretentious or hipster if you like, but I've never seen them differently. Common humanity has always been a strong ideal in my life. From the street sweeper to the CEO of Citibank, I believe that all should be treated with equal respect and dignity. The journalist says that 'we've all been there' when she describes how she abhors foreign workers and ignores them. That just screams auntie to me. I've always smiled at the cleaners in my school, the bus drivers on my way up the bus, I've spoken to strangers on the bus before, and of course to the numerous wise taxi drivers, and many a times given directions as I'm sure anyone would have with a smile. I cannot understand it that after so long, humanity is still climbing out of the dark ages of mindsets and culture. That so many still cling to discrimination and class.

When news broke of the strikes, I was not concerned at the illegality of it. I mean come on, seriously? The fact that there was even a possibility of wage discrimination in such a publicly regulated company disturbed me deeply. Yet the media don't seem to care as much as the poor Chinese workers do they? How can it be that in our 'first-world' transport system and economy, there exists an underbelly, a different society altogether that accepts wages close to the minimum wage in China (but facing the higher cost of living here)? If a country lays claim and ambition to becoming a first-world society, then all who reside should be given equal rights and ownership of public infrastructure.

News and Views

An unfinished post I might as well post since I'm not going to finish it.
Israel and Hamas
I'm not a H2 History student. But it's really interesting to watch all these events going on.
I say first that I'm not an Israel fan.
Their military is wicked awesome (6 day war anyone?) but their aggression and pandering to the US is very disturbing. I empathize though. Anyone who plays Civ 5 knows how irritating it is to have aggressive allies who don't ever want to co-operate with you and will declare war on the first sign of weakness.
But this mentality has gone too far. I think Palestine should be a free state, yet Israel doesn't look ready to give up land even to peaceful people who don't really like Hamas either. Hamas on the other hand, are being foolish. They cannot hope to win a war I tell you. And being equally aggressive only serves to strengthen Israel's resolve and shun the rest of the world's backing. But it is also understandabe. Most revolutions of secession in the past have been bloody, especially in the face of ruthless government. And if you know the situation of the embargo and military presence, Israel is not being a very nice neighbour.
Israel's search for a so-called "long-term" solution looks increasingly like a ground offensive. Which by many means will be a long-term problem.

The defence minister and the inflammatory comments
No this isn't the f you incident. I'm talking about page 2 of the Straits Times today. Apparently two websites posted baseless allegations of Dr Ng and was then told by Dr Ng's lawyer to remove them and post an apology. Both did so, but because one of the websites allowed comments that criticized both Dr Ng and his lawyer (Mr Singh), Mr Singh wrote to them again and asked them to do a second apology because the first was 'insincere'. I'm conflicted on this. On one hand, I utterly dislike non-fact checking Republicans opposition websites like TR because this so-called usage of  'freedom of speech' is more like an excuse to LIE. It paves the way towards Terry Jones Koran burning style society, and only causes useless unnecessary divisiveness due to politics in our society as a result of wrong information. And we all know what happens when a group of people are washed in wrong information. Brainwash. The obsession of freedom in some Western societies amounts to nothing more than a cult. Think Jim Sleeper calling us sheep and repressed people. Clearly he is 'enlightened' because he lives in America and not third-world society Singapore.

This sort of dangerous thinking if very hard to remove. Because as people get older and drowned in even more misguided views, they become more close-minded and cannot be convinced.

On the other hand, it is also rather disturbing how swiftly (I admit I'm not aware of the contents of the e-mail) came the government response. Right now, the government is relatively free from corruption, clean and efficient. There might be a time when it isn't. Think why we study Venice in Social Studies. What happens when there are real problems with the incumbent and when people voice their dissenting views, the corrupt authorities abuse their power to remove real truths about the government much in the same way?  Hence I remain conflicted. This sort of thing was in my opinion acceptable, even pragmatic, when SG gained independence, especially in a multi-cultural society where one person's stupidity could erupt into open racial conflict. Right now, I just don't know. Perhaps some freedom and trust should be given upon the people to make accurate, critical analysis of information.

Then again, we are talking about human beings in a democracy. Quoting my good friend "One man's stupidity is worth my intelligence"

PSLE
Not sure if not publishing top-scorers is a good idea...
The purpose of it is to celebrate achievers, people who worked hard and should be proud of it.
It is true that more emphasis should be on students who have other gifts or are strong of character. Perhaps then, we should be trying to celebrate them more rather than celebrating less of the academically-inclined. But it is also true that really the problem is cultural. Even if you publish an article of a student with exceptional leadership qualities next to a high-scoring student, doubtless most of the Singaporean public will ignore the former. It is disgusting but cultural is a long-term strength and weakness is most societies. It will take time.

World Peace

Since I was 11 years old that has been my birthday wish. (You know, when you blow out the candles or what not.

But no it's not like I'm pretending to be on some higher moral ground.
I was just kind of lazy.

Also I thought about it and the old adage 'be careful what you wish for' applies, so instead of wishing something selfish that I might have regretted not choosing something else later. A universally awesome wish sufficed. Also if wishes were real (we all were a little superstitious then), I didn't feel like wasting it on a video game ya know?

But I'd like to see it one day. Would really really love to. To one day wake up and look at my newspaper headlines say 'World Peace achieved as the last militant group surrenders to UN troops' or something. That would be something wouldn't it? It's wonderful and exciting. A day when all the fighting stops. When humanity is united.

The grandeur of secular humanism has always appealed to me. Something we could do ourselves. Building a better future in fraternity and freedom. (Viva la Revolucion!)

I was thinking about it this morning because of the recent attacks on the US ambassador, and while the Economist argues that the Arab countries are moving forward, it's still a long way to go really. Osama's death. How symbolic vs pragmatic has it been? I guess it's justice but that's all to me. The extremists are still extremists. People are still getting slaughtered in Syria, Yemen...

And yeah this whole issue just annoys me how ludicrously over-reactive humans are to irrational behavior.
Look, a fucked up guy decides to make a fucked up video. I feel that Indonesia's a good example for a response here. "We think it's really offensive you're insulting our religion, but no we will not be provoked by it". Awesome sauce, no protests. The response SHOULDN'T be "Oh look this douche made stupid offensive remarks. We should go fuck up the people who had nothing to do with it and actually want to make peace with our country! (ie the diplomats)" Real smart.

Freedom of speech is not a problem. And no, it's naive to say that there shouldn't be any insulting, offensive remarks as a result, such things are normative and inevitable given our messy irrational nature at times. But we shouldn't pander to them. Just ignore the clearly stupid remarks and try to be more self-assured of your religion and yourself. An affront to religion no doubt, give a good rebuttal and move on. And if more people are starting to subscribe to this rubbish view of your religion, debate with politeness but conviction. And not burn their ambassadors and flags.

Will still wait for North Korea to start feeding its people

A real classic!

A morning destitute

Woke up like any on a hot hazy afternoon with little direction for the day.
I staggered off bed as usual and headed for the world outside my cave.
But this post is not about how I eventually conquered my breakfast and all that sort of phenomenally useless bits of information some people might post about.

I'm posting because I just finished the Saturday Special Report on Nursing Homes.

It is absolutely heart-wrenching to witness the fragility of old age again, having done so first hand two years ago when my grandfather was bedridden.

He had been living by himself in a flat somewhere near Macpherson, Circuit Road or something. Then everything sort of became a hazy film strip. One day hearing that he fell from my mother. The next day again. The next day diagnosed with osteoporosis. And everything sort of went downhill from there.

Just. One. Fall.

My uncle didn't want to take him. And my father told my mother the son should take responsibility, not the daughter. (He's from the maternal side) And no one had the resources or time to take care of him since everyone was working. Hence, no one could take care of him. I didn't know this was the case then. Going further back, I still remember sitting in his clunky little Hyundai as he fetched me from home after Robotics when I was P5, and other times when he took me for Chinese Tuition when I was P4 to P6. Talking about old age and other things I cannot remember. I still remembered he had a flair for engineering and loved building things. (He was an electrical engineer). He gave me some old kind of building toys to play with, lego of course, and another, more complicated set with cogs and spindles. Only now do I know how much he loved us and I guilt over my stone face every time I see my family.

Not a very nice way to wake up to a mugging weekend.

Look out the window and feel a therapeutic wind and life goes on.

Heart-Ripping

One of the most chilling videos I've ever watched. Thanks Paul for posting this.

I remember posting in anger at some of my classmates for joking that they were 'enlightened' by Mr Khoo's conspiracy video of the 9/11 attacks. Honestly, just because its against convention doesn't make it more credible. And nevertheless, the blame game must stop. Everyone needs to right the wrong. Brinksmanship again.

Initially, I was going to post about other things, but ever so often, I think it is good practice to sensitize yourself to others. Which is why I read about current affairs, or why people should read.

The video just shocked me to the core. For a moment, I was just there. I was just in that smoking office room. And then it was over. Evil prevailed as the last words 'oh God, oh God' just ringed in my ears. And even now as I look around in my room, watching the cars outside my building run past, nothing feels real.

I remember watching on the screen in the hospital. Yes, my younger brother was born at that moment, within the hour of the attacks for certain. It is truly a tragic miracle. Back then, I didn't really get things like that.

But now, a decade down the road, after all the countless times I've tried to imagine myself in their shoes, the pain and the extreme terror, my heart just aches deeply. Literally. A sharp sting, in my left chest area.

'The death of one is a tragedy. The death of a million is a statistic.' ~Joseph Stalin (I checked, Jaren)

As we just continue on with our lives. The PW. The Promos. It just seems wrong doesn't it? And yet we can only live and pray.

God just heal all the broken hearts, heal the intangible scars as only you can. I just pray for those affected by the attacks. Never let it happen again.

Silent

If I had time I would do so many more things that I enjoy. But I don't.
So Bro please understand, I'm neither a tool nor a pushover. You are a million times physically stronger than me, but in spirit you are bankrupt. You turned away from the Lord, you drink, you swear with no self-control when playing a simple video game. I respect you vastly and love you more, and I may always be a little brother to you, but I have priorities and problems too.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

I lost my earphones.
I always imagined God was speaking to me through the songs that played on shuffle, indeed, it effectively washed away all worry and sin for some time and it through melody and lyrics that I overcame even in a time before I accepted Jesus.
So what does it mean? Why am I to lose the sanctity and escapism of music?
Time to face the music without.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am deeply concerned for my family... Elder brother, spouting vulgarities 24/7... Mother, scolding colleagues and family 24/7... Father, seems like he smokes in secret... Younger Brother, pampered, ill-disciplined, and turning to the computer 24/7. God help them and use me as a vessel to bring them to Christ.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Don't stop the music and piano Jia Lok.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

We have lost a real sense of education. Human curiosity has been reduced to wondering if this is counted for promos. The spirit of learning embellishes school missions but the mission of the school embodies grades. Still, it's the best option for a majority.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

The irony that God is the only source of strength in a godless world.
Our old colonial masters have churned a generation of feral butter from sour milk.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

The surge of tumblr references - the memes in particular, is a curious thing. Selfish me wouldn't share the joy and jokes, yet the true person will seek beyond the humorous truths to the deep grievances and poetry of an online community made of mishaps and freaks - all of us on earth.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

How many times have we heard a cheesy song,
How many times have we read a cliché quote,
How many times have we have we brushed them off, only to realize all your true inner-feelings?
To whom I've never mentioned explicitly but still enjoy your blogs that do not list on the sidebar.

4 Days / The H1s

Of CCAL camp.
I'm glad I click really well with other CCALs. And woohoo dragon boating :D. As usual I was insecure about... being me haha. For one thing, I have about as much strength as a 14 year old swimmer. For another, I'm not so much the camper type. Not that I mind the outdoors. But I don't know much about cooking, or pitching tents, etc. But I guess, you just have to be confident about yourself, and people will respect you for your strengths and identify you as such, not your weaknesses. Or maybe its just cause CCALs are the sort that gracefully accept and genuinely respect everyone. Go Raffles!

On a related note, 80% of the Ngee Ann-ians (5) in Raffles are CCALs!!! :D I can really start to see students appreciating and loving their secondary schools, JCs, and beyond. But what about our Primary Schools and Kindergartens? I don't know if anyone did, but in my later years in Ngee Ann, I really started to absorb values and build my character. Morrison-Richardson House Captain: Ngee Ann. Raffles Rock Chair: Ngee Ann. Table Tennis Chair: Ngee Ann. Raffles Photographic Society Chair: Ngee Ann.

So hi! I'm Li Keen, I take decent photos, sing OK, enjoy challenges and volunteer (too much)!! ^^ I do my best to love all and respect all. I make an effort to include everyone and 饮水思源!I kill myself for making mistakes over and over again, to ensure maximum learning efficiency!!! >:D

All the following shots were taken in Bintan where the camp was held, all of them are also on facebook.

The guy on the right is photoshopped in cause he overslept xD

Edit: I just realized that centralizing my photos will cut-off certain portions on the right! But not doing so will make writing accompanying text a whole lot more irritating!! 左右为难...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Of break before I go to the USA
I practically have no holiday. After CCAL camp comes 4 days of hard core photo editing and then economics educational trip, during which I have been told to study and learn loads. When I come back, its just in time for Chinese Orals and make up lessons, plus all my leftover homework. This is probably the closest to 'no holiday' ever. After all the half-joking complaining in earlier years, you really realize how crazy JC life is.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Of Change.
Do you believe anyone can change drastically in four days? I think after that blog post 'TIME', I've really come out of my little cave. Maybe it came slowly. Having been put into the Chair position, you can't help but get a confidence boost. And I think I really needed it. We keep telling ourselves we'll always get back up, we'll recover from failures, from breakups, we'll work hard, we'll succeed. But when the going gets tough, you break down. And you realize your limits are... limited. Its really true that you need to taste defeat before you become great. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger. If you shelter yourself your whole life, you won't get anywhere.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

General Paper
The recently concluded Pre-U seminar and upcoming Econs trip has painfully reminded me that I have not read the papers or Time or Economist in a week. :/ Has the GP rep lost his drive? Was he only interested in the elections or Libya after all?

Project Work
I feel terrible for not contributing anything the past few crucial days leading up to the GPP submission. I'm really glad my group is so hardworking and tolerant. From what I've heard, we're the only group which managed to get approval. It may be owing to the fact that my teacher suggested our new topic anyway, but I cannot discount the fact that my group is made up of dedicated individuals with drive and BROTHERHOOD!!! :D (No girls mahhh :x) Joshua Chia is a true blue HUFFLEPUFF Victorian, lives up to the motto Nil Sine Labore really well. I want to pass on being leader to him, but well, the position is more symbolic anyway.

Weekend

Lately my posts have been fueled by concentrated emotions (~1mol/dm3). So during the weekends when I'm mostly slacking, goofing off and the like, there isn't really much to be angry/depressed over. Its a time when I''m actually happy.

So... LET'S TALK A BIT OF POLITICS.

Firstly, as a left of center person, I am open to change and new ideas, but I always consider the cost and radicalism is a big no-no. I also believe that you don't need to commit to any one party, and even if you do, you don't have to like everything about them, nor support them all the way. In other words, compromise - a big part of any democracy.

Let me just do a quick summary of my views, because if you really want to talk you can just do so elsewhere so not to bore the rest. (If my views seem very radical or hard-line, its just for comical purposes xD) I don't feel like elaborating. So I'll just make it a bunch of asshole statements xD

First up: Pro-PAP/Anti-Opposition views
1. Lofty Western Ideals are pure rubbish. In fact, its garbage and rubbish at the same time. Its GARBISH.
2. Many Voters are RETARDS.
3. The American political system SUCKS.
4. Minimum wage is SPASTIC.
5. Track Record, level of Education and Credentials MATTER.
6. Change is DANGEROUS/RISKY.
7. Money & Economics are IMPORTANT.
8. National Education, maybe a little bit of biasness is NECESSARY.
9. Protests and inciting violence AIN'T COOL.

Now, Pro-Opposition views/Anti-PAP views
1. GRCs are OK, gerrymandering is NOT.
2. 85 - 2 parliamentary standings is BULLYING.
3. Smear campaigns are DIRTY. (No pun intended)
4.Threatening is NASTY.
5. Continuous, blatant rampage of constitutional change and passing of bills is SPARTA MADNESS.
6. Accountability is a MUST.
7. Some competition HELPS, NOT threatens.
8. Apologizing only during elections is WTF.
9.Complacency & Corruption likely HAPPENS.

The election results were pretty predictable IMO.

AND THAT'S IT.

Some entertaining vids.
Darn, wish I could hear LKY in the old days.

No time to post - sorry peeps

So I spotted this in the newspaper. I wonder if its a typo. Technically he's a vice-pres, but of NTUC or something. My reaction was the same when I found out we had a mayor of Singapore xD

Sunday, 20 March 2011

Just had to double post. Omnibus again! (I learnt that word from I am Ninja LOL)

I'm posting status like updates which I'm either too paiseh or too long to put on facebook, or prefer to have on a pleasant quiet space, my blog. :D

---------------------------------------------------------------

If you read the paper's err a day ago or something, you can see the ending paragraph of some article on the GE. Something like Senior Minister Teo Ser Luk will be taking out his old VICTORIA SCHOOL UNIFORM as the PAP meeting requires all white. LOL! No wonder VS/SJI/RI produce the leaders hehe.

--------------------------------------------------------------

I don't know if you know Jia Hao, but it was super awesome eating with you. Never thought I'd fine another guy who was willing to eat at a semi-expensive restaurant though it was just two of us, and it wasn't even dinner time. And yeah, don't know why, but I find talking to you pretty easy. Finding a topic and all that.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Woah what the crap? Holidays ended. Dam. I was starting to get into the groove too. I guess its cause I have no CCA right now. Bah. I think its pretty pathetic, but my friends tell me to stop being such an emo basket of depression, so OK. I guess I'll just have fun while you guys have training.

---------------------------------------------------------------

I get really really really pissed at myself when I forgot to do a kind or courteous act, given the opportunity. Seriously! I hate it! Maybe that's why I went a little insane and donated another two dollars to Japan after I rudely tried to scram off the bus, blocking passengers who were boarding >:O (after another 5 dollars a few days ago and a future donation next week watching a combined choir concert for Japan, AND donating 5 dollars to Christchurch) I know I shouldn't be counting, but my Mother doesn't really like me donating that much. I can't help but feel ashamed both ways. I need my own salary!!

---------------------------------------------------------------

Woah I didn't know Randy Newman (You've got a friend in me, Short People, etc.) also did the theme song for the awesome show Monk! I somehow got attached to this show because I was similarly a bit OCD, and I liked it that instead of fielding the usual super fit and super smart cop/detective for the show, the main protagonist, Adrian Monk (Duh), is a fallible, vulnerable EX-detective, but with a sharp mind, that at least partially stems from his weakness of OCD. Clever, entertaining, and very deep.

Also, good acting. And of course, the really really catchy, jazzy song that I love. Because it really captures the essence of the show, and its out of the norm. I like jazz and swing, whatever you call this quite a bit ^_^

---------------------------------------------------------------

Since we're on the topic of mock crime shows @_@ Another one that I really enjoyed was Midsomer Murders (used to turn to Hallmark all the time for that!). One, because I love me some British accent and countryside scenes :D and two, because the detective is not a stereotype, young, handsome, bufflord who solves crimes in a big city, but a white-haired, looking like he's retiring soon individual with a wife and a small cottage, helping to put the victim's family to peace in a village on the countryside (Once again, love the scenery)

And yeah, just like Monk, I also love the theme! Very original and recognizable.

Wow I really seem to watch a lot of these kind of shows (mostly cause my father regularly watches them too). For instance, Law and Order, Without a Trace, Criminal Minds, CSI (Though I'm not a fan of the really fake gadgets they use, the acting is decent and the story well played, also. Horatio is cool shit lol.) Though, really, I think Monk and Midsomer Murders would be my top two.

Dislike: Burn Notice. I think they're playing a bit to the trend now and fielding hollywood style actors and actresses. The spy know-how, trivia and decent acting is a save though.

Dislike: 24. Wts. Seriously. Wts is this show. Stoic bufflord, don't play by the rules hero going around chasing terrorists and whatnot SOLO STYLE. Fucking retarded. Cult of personality. Serious.

Dislike: NCIS. SOOO bloody commercialized. Like serious, keeps talking about how their number one all that shit, and look at the cast. I mean, come on you can't be serious. Look at how freaking stereotype they are? Though, I honestly haven't seen the show, maybe I should...

What else have I forgotten? Meh. Must be I don't like.

Now Imagine working endless hours staring at a MacBook Pro and dragging stuff here and there.
NOT YET.
Now imagine you have to restart the whole thing again due to teachers' suggested improvements.
NOW IMAGINE DOING 3 OF THOSE PAPERS.

1: I literally am not good at cheering people up
2: They might lash back at me and talk about how wonderful my score is.

I know my score is good! But come on, I'm like some weakass sickly guy who fail NAPFA test. Everyone has strengths and weaknesses. So stop attacking me OK?

Campaign message to chew on: OK to eat alone

The Straits Times Friday, Janurary 7 2011 Page A16

This.

What I'm trying to say almost to the letter.

Quote
[The event] is not about promoting isolation, but raising awareness that it is OK to eat alone. Otherwise it would have been an 'I love to eat alone' rather than 'I dare to eat alone' campaign"

Guys, I know you are trying to be sympathetic to me because I'd rather eat alone than eat at Fast Food. But don't be. I'm not depressed or lonely or anything.

I love company! But don't forsake fast food if you want to eat it just for me.

Its really OK to eat alone. There's this negative connotation attached to alone I guess is all.

Will try and post some pics soon hehe

Indonesia atheists go online

Straits Times Page A13 December 23

So if you read this small article which unfortunately is too small to post online... Just like to put it out there I think countries should be as secular as possible. Not only is it fairer in a globalised world, but some of the leading countries in HDI are very much leaders in being secular as well. Sweden, Norway being examples. Err, I think.

Anyway, the 2nd point I wanted to make was to Hendrik lol. Cause your right, atheists = people with no faith, and not my initial idea of anti-religon.

There has been a lot of talk about 'not believing the official story' going around, especially with Michael Moore's quote supporting Assange.

I'd just like to point out that believing the conspiracy theories, without analyzing the facts, without clear evidence, and discounting the official story completely, is almost equally naive to me.

I do not believe conspiracists have no motive. That they are altruistic people who seek to 'inform' the truth. Nope. People throughout the centuries, like to scare. It's fun, it's enjoyable even. People also like authority. They want to think they know better than others,, that its their duty to spread the word, that they have the power to change the world, probably what I'm doing now isn't it?

Well like it or not I enjoy preaching hehe.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Humans are naturally flawed. Do I think it is possible for someone to be completely benevolent and good-willed? No. We judge. We misunderstand. We assume. We don't know much to be honest. Socrates' quote comes into mind: 'All I know is that I know nothing'.

I'm not a pessimist. It doesn't mean we can't try to be good people, or be someone we think we ought to be.

So Michael Moore's vision of a completely transparent society? Not working for me. I picture endless wars, as diplomats and politicians lose their reasoning when faced with frank feelings towards each other.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

You know Lee Wei Ling? MM Lee's neuro-scientist daughter?

She wrote an article for think-thank a while back. I was influenced by it. She says we don't need to be too politically correct (PC) all the time. Kind of struck me as more credible writing. She wrote frankly and sincerely, and maybe more importantly, against what my conventions of MM Lee's daughter would write.

She said that the races are different, and we cannot deny it. Jews are better economists. Aborigines are less intellectual. But her point wasn't to generalize. Her point is that, through culture, religion, history and time, human beings became different. its just genetics. She meant that in general, the races are so on so. One example she gave was that most Jewish Rabbis were scholars, and because they were highly respected in Jewish society, they were often sought after for marriage, and hence continued a line of smart children.

She remains United Nations Approved though, because she goes on to say, that it's also true that an aborigine can win a Jew in a math test fair and square, and that we shouldn't judge an individual right away based on a majority, but still, we need to take into account their strengths and weaknesses when making policies and what not.

Even Dr Mahathir said, that if Malaysia adopted a truly meritocratic society, a fair and equal system, something like Singapore, the Malays would lose out to other races. He didn't say it directly, but we can guess what he meant.

So can you really blame the diplomats for saying such impolite comments about other countries/races? Are they being discriminatory? Yes. Are they wrong? Maybe. Who knows? No one.

"Not fairy tales but porn" An excerpt from the Straits Times

I don't know why I'm continuing this streak of news commenting but this is pretty funny.
Lost in translation I guess.

"Beijing: Chinese publishers have pulled a collection of Brothers Grimm fairy tales from children's shelves in bookstores after mistakenly translating a Japanese pornographic reinterpretation of the tales.

China Friendship Publishing Company and China Media Time translated the erotic retelling of the stories by Japanese duo Kiryu-Misao without credit after mistaking them for the originals, the Global Times newspaper reported." Agence France-Presse

I think I naturally prefer British to American music.
From the Burnout 3 Soundtrack, which I think was the best of the burnout games I've played, which is only burnout 3 and burnout paradise lol...

Curiously, do they put the song title first or the artist first?

Permit denied for human rights march

In the home section of the Straits Times today, an article with this title can be found.

In a gist: "Police have turned down an application by the Singaporeans for Democracy political association for a permit to stage a march on Friday to commemorate International Human Rights Day"

So That's the first line of the article, and I'm immediately thinking: "Wtf, how could they? Its perfectly commendable!" Police cited a vague reason as usual 'law and order issues' they say. Once again, I'm astonished, is it an inside job? I'm already thinking.

Then I went on reading and found the answer.

"30 people...march with placards calling for freedom of speech and assembly, and free and fair elections, among other things" and "planned to hold the march from Hong Lim Park to Parliament House" AND "Police are advising the organiser to hold the event at Speakers' Corner in Hong Lim Park.

Want an L4 answer? The police is a branch under the government and hence blah blah blah. Standard no-brainer.

Now do you want an L5 answer?  Well IMO, protests and march have a knack for drumming up issues for no reason. For instance, after witnessing the Red Shirt protests on the news, for some reason, I just thought half of Thailand's population consists of red shirts, the other half being yellow shirts. Which is really superficial thinking, but its true. People just need to see these sort of big events staged by a small numbers to become over analytical.

In fact, the red shirt protests only covered SOME of Bankok. Compared to the rest of Thailand. Super small. Yet, there's so much hype about it! True, there was also a lot of violence in this event. But don't you think calling for human rights and free and fair elections in front of Parliament may cause some misconceptions?

Passerbys may start thinking that Singapore's system of Government is in some kind of peril or facing imminent collapse and about to be taken over by Hitler or something. Don't underestimate the power of suggestion.

Bottom line: Staging such a march MAY cause a frenzy for no reason. It may even undermine the government in the process.

In fact, I was just talking to my ex-classmate yesterday (actually today at around 1am). To me, protests always bring attention, but rarely change.

Do you know Jon Stewart from the daily show? He organised a 'rally to restore sanity'. One of his key points was: We cannot allow radicals from different sides to always be shown on the news and slowly becoming the voice of the people. He was speaking of recent Christians VS Islam events in the USA. And I agree with him. Seeing all these marches/protests may not really be the voice of the people, but merely a small group of radicals CLAIMING they represent the majority.

Of course, you can disagree with me! This is a blog, not a encyclopedia. There have been protests that succeeded, and I think partially because they did represent the majority. Like marches for Women Rights back in 1960-80s? America.

Just watched Valkyrie yesterday (rented the DVD from VideoEzy)
Good movie, as history students, we know the outcome but we still want to know what really happened that led to it. Was a good thriller and most of the facts are fundamentally there. Tom Cruise seriously looks like Von Stauffenberg, the other actors and their respective roles too.
About the real story, they tested certain change in factors later on and the conclusion is really sad.
Had the 20 July bomb:
1. Been detonated with both explosive packs that Von Stauffenberg had
2.Been detonated inside the reinforced command bunker as was planned before the day was too hot and shifted to the conference hut with windows
3. Not been shifted by one of the German officers to behind the table's leg that shielded Hitler by accident
Hitler would have been killed.
I respect these brave men.

Me-day

The word 'alone', to many, carries negative connotations.

But it isn't necessarily so. I believe that the sooner someone stops thinking that being alone is boring, depressing, anti-social, or sad, the sooner he can enjoy being by him/herself.

We all need friends, I agree. But how is it that my generation just has to call someone up on his iPhone 4 or waste hours sms-ing just to escape solitude, I do not know. Why is it that you can't spend some time having your own fun for just a day or two, or an hour? Have we lost ourselves to socializing?

Till this day, there are still hermits, there are still elderly singles, people, who spend a possibly endless time alone. Maybe we are all just scared we'll end up shooting ourselves one day and die single due to loneliness.

Its true that staying lonely forever is really really tough. But not for few hours. Why not do the things you always wanted to try? There's no one around to judge after all.

Well, today my entire family is out and I'm by myself alone in my house.

I woke up like any other day and drank milk, read the papers, played some single player Warcraft, showered, read some Lord of the Rings. Went out for lunch, still by myself, listened to music, progressed on my new year's resolution by renting a movie (instead of every Singaporeans basic instinct to Torrent).

Every person should be him/herself. I sometimes feel that we all have lost some originality in ourselves somehow.

Rifdi's text break!! =DD

It may seem strange to some of you when I refused fast-food with friends. But that's just me. I'm certain there are others who would do the same.

Well in the news today, on Prime Page A3 you can see an article on how hawker food ain't healthy either.

But one cannot be too shallow.
When you eat fast food, where does the money go? To TNCs who already earn billions. Turn on your television and you'll be hard pressed to not find at least one advert on fast food. Do hawkers advertise their sodium-rich, msg-drenched, processed food via mass-media?

And its ironic here isn't it? Do you notice these adverts often have youngsters (and sometimes elderly) chowing down on their products with glee? And yet, nowadays, while teens go on about rules and nasty parents, rebelling against 'the system', they are easily taken in by popularized products and fast food which insidiously do harm to them?

Then again, I know that everyone IS different! So if you just NEED to go out and spend everyday with friends, go ahead =D
Bah, time to stop ranting and get on with my single-player afternoon =D

When emotions run wild

When you have just woken up, especially if you were drunk last night.
When your tired, especially after a terrible day at work.
When you're like me, and you have chosen a path of much solitude.
When you're like me, woken up earlier than everyone else on a quiet Sunday morning, lonely.

I advocate a lot lately, that just because you choose not to pursue a choice that leads to friends at the expense of something in you, it doesn't mean your anti-social. So I lived by it for a while.

I look back and I'm slightly confused, regretful even. All those times I chose to eat alone because I refuse fast food, all those times, are they wasted away without friends? Nearing the end of this year, it feels so much like it. I seemed to have forgotten my VS life was coming to a close, and I should make the most of my time with my friends, before I say goodbye.

It's not that I would give up a view, a stance, just to have friends. No, that's just like joining a gang, succumbing to peer pressure. Still, I cannot shake this feeling of loneliness. I just need one. One friend that will follow me.

I'm even mulling over my choice of 'a change in environment' thing right now. Do I really want to go to RJC? Possibly leaving all my friends forever? Of course, some might say its never forever, we'll always remember each other. Yes, remember each other, then. But we won't see each other through the times and things, the friendship may never be restored to its original state. I just wish, hope that at least one good friend will follow me. Don't make me give up my academic dreams, please.

I don't know if you can empathize with me. You didn't choose to go alone when no one else would.

I just... I just want to have so much fun with my friends now, before we all part. I'm so lonely, I wouldn't mind going out to watch a movie I dislike with Alif and Rifdi or something. This is probably exactly how I felt when I left Ngee Ann, just that I couldn't fathom it then, I didn't understand. I still miss all my Ngee Ann friends dearly, but they've changed, and I know that, but its still depressing. I didn't follow them, and now its like I don't know them. Will this happen when I leave VS? Undeniable. You know the answer.

But

All this happens, in the wake of Aung San Suu Kyi release, and I am deeply humbled. I shouldn't fear change, or progress. I'm just afraid, of leaving where I belong, into the great unknown future. Even after two decades of detention, this woman still holds on to her mantras closely. I wondered why she even got a Nobel Peace Prize, now I understand. What will happen to me? Will I change? Forget? What happens when I leave, 4D, will I ever find such a like-minded class ever again?

And all this while, Keane's Everybody's Changing just rings and plays in my lonely head.

How I spend my solitude sometimes. In my childhood? Building lego cities. Now, Sim City 4. I like the myriad of music in the game, it suits the different themes of a city atmosphere, from jazz and bossa nova to techno and electric. A 'life goes on in a bustling city' feel and the 'fast paced development' feel. This is the latter. Why no sim city 5!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?????????????????? Will Wight LEFT DAMMIT.

Normal blog post (since when?! =O)

If you have done considerably consistent work throughout your life in VS, you might find the 'O' level as normal as can be, possibly even fun, given the free time.

Everyday I wake up I read the newspaper if its an afternoon paper. Right now, much like a regular blog, I'd like to share some of my thoughts on some interesting news I find nowadays.

SGX-ASX merger

Ok I'm not one to go straight for economic news (I find it positively boring!) cause I know nuts about 'liquidation', 'assets', 'default' or whatever. However, I find this one interesting because there's a lot of politics involved, especially on the Australian side (Of course, this is reported by our own news, so I can't be sure if there isn't some level of bias).

So if you don't follow the news, here's the breakdown. Singapore has made an $11 Billion dollar bid for the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX). Now, I don't know much about economics as I've said, but from what I know a stock exchange buys and trades shares, and helps companies list their own shares, so by buying over the Aussies, we technically merge all the companies listed under both, which gives us tremendous potential, much like how the South East Asian nations pooled together to form a large single production base called ASEAN.

With this merger, both countries' stock exchange will become very attractive in the Asia-Pacific region, given the tremendous size the stock exchange becomes. It may even be a threat to Hong Kong's stock exchange which is the largest in the region. (Helped largely by the gargantuan number of companies that list themselves in, for the fact that the Chinese Government laws that all comapnies that set up in China list in Hong Kong)

Here's the problem. Shareholders for either exchanges have their shares 'diluted' because the merger makes their stake in the exchange smaller in comparism (I think). So they will naturally protest. At the same time, some form of Xenophobia (I don't know if this is true, I think its rather tragic Singapore is also attacking Australia, though its just an opnion).

Here's where my views come in:

Perhaps, maybe Australia has these negative feelings towards Asians all along. I mean, if I think about it, Australia is a very different, very western country, in what I would consider the middle of nowhere, where just a large pool of salt water (called the Indian Ocean) stands in between 800 million South East Asians. At the same time, it has been attacked by Asians before! Remember World War II when Japan did strike at Australia?

And here and there we are hearing reports of Indian students being attacked by nationalistic Australians. Of course, to be fair, Australia is a generally friendly country, and these cases are exceptions. But are there underlying xenophobics? I don't know, maybe, and here's why.

Australian politicians are targetting our alleged 'appalling human rights track record'. Even so, well I don't give a dam what they think, cause I'm having a good life here really, and by the way, our economy PWNS them. I'm just saying.

I'm reading a lot of comments such as 'Repressive Authoritarian State' and 'Insult to freedom of speech' about us, and actually, there's no denying it, we aren't as 'free' as America or whatever. But guess what, we have racial harmony and are one of the least corrupt countries ever.

Maybe they just feel its not right that a small little red dot is in control of one of their prized assets. Heck, I was really surprised we even had the capacity to buy over them. I mean, I get that you know? But are we really taking away what they own? Like I said, I don't know much about economics so I can't tell.

HEH looks like I used up most of my self-imposed posting limit without talking about other news. I guess this piece of news is just so darn interesting? Or am I just a weirdo? OK time to crawl back into my cave <--- Jaren taught me that.

Why no more of my photography or music? OK I'll try and seive an old piece of photography out.
Have I posted this before? Can't remember. Malaysia. Yeah its pretty louzy I know haha, I got no more good pics liao.
